Nan-In, một thiền sư Nhật vào thời Minh - Trị (1868- 1912), tiếp một vị giáo sư đại học đến tham vấn về Thiền. Nan-In đãi trà. Ngài chế một cốc đầy và vẫn tiếp tục rót. Vị giáo sư nhìn cốc nước tràn cho đến khi không nhịn được, bèn lên tiếng: "Nó đã đầy tràn rồi, không thêm được nữa đâu!"
"Thì cũng như chiếc cốc này" Nan-In thong thả nói, "ông đã mang đầy tư kiến và thành kiến. Làm sao tôi có thể chỉ cho ông về Thiền nếu ông không cạn cốc của ông?"
